Review: PSD NOAA Flashlight / Radio / Charger - SlashGear

PSD-NOAA-flashlight-radio-charger.jpg

A review of Life+Gear’s hand-cranked PSD NOAA flashlight has been posted over at SlashGear.com. 'It’s a fact of life that, when you go to investigate what could possibly be a gremlin under your car hood, you tend to discover that the AAs in your flashlight have succumbed already, so the Life+Gear PSD NOAA is off to a good start: the bulb might only be a 0.5 Watt LED, but the fact that it’s powered via the simple hand crank is a lifesaver for anyone, like me, that tends to forget about batteries until they’re actually needed. The PSD will also run on standard AA batteries or a DC power supply, too, but it’s bright enough under your own wrist power; one minute of cranking is enough for around 30 minutes of torchlight.'

Modded hand-cranked flashlight charges your iPod Shuffle

hand-crank-USB-power-generator.jpg

Darren Yates, writing over at Techlogg.com, details his modifications of a hand-crank torch to produce enough juice to power up an iPod Shuffle. 'First off, take the torch and remove the four Philips head screws from the back. Keep them safe and take off the top cover. Underneath, you’ll see the back of the motor at back and a circuit board with two wires connected to the motor. Desolder these wires and remove the three Philips head screws holding the circuit board in place. DON’T LOSE THESE SCREWS – you’ll need them later. Pull up the circuit board with the LEDs and the front bezel. Put the circuit board aside – you won’t need it any more but keep the bezel – we’ll use it in a moment.'

‘Pull-to-Charge’ USB Charging Led Flashlight

USB-Charging-Flashlight.jpg

Alan Parekh writing over at Hacked Gadgets outlines his modification of the Pull-to-Charge LED Forever Flashlight into a USB charging flashlight capable of powering a cell phone or iPod. ‘After reviewing the Forever Flashlight for The Gadget Panel I couldn’t help but take its capabilities to the next level. I wanted a portable USB charger that could recharge things like my iPod Shuffle. I know there are lots of battery powered options, but I wanted something that didn’t need battery replacement. USB power is 5 Volts and that is exactly what this flashlight puts out on the auxiliary power plug so there is no voltage level conversion required. I also like the fact that this flashlight has Ni-MH batteries inside, not just some big capacitors like some other units.’

Ultra Power Zipping LED Forever Flashlight

Ultra-Power-Zipping-LED-Forever-Flashlight.jpg

If for some reason you are not particularly enthused with the idea of shaking or cranking a flashlight to produce illumination but would however desire a light which does not require the use of batteries, the Ultra Power Zipping LED Forever flashlight which requires a couple tugs for operation may be the gadget for you.. 'Two quick pulls on the line at the bottom of the unit, and you have light for minutes on end. This isn't like the clumsy shake lights or others where you have to sit there and wind the unit again and again. Pull twice and you have a powerful flashlight for minutes and minutes. Unlike the crank lights, the zipping action of the Ultra Power Zipping LED Forever Flashlight causes the coils to continue to rotate and generate power after you are finished doing the work. The Ultra Power Zipping LED Forever Flashlight is available from Gadget Universe for $29.95.

Eurohike Wind-up Phone Charger Reviewed

Eurohike-Wind-up-phone-charger.jpg

A review of the Eurohike Wind-up phone charger which includes an LED flashlight has been posted over at Tech Digest. 'The built-in torch is actually surprisingly handy – it charges very quickly, retains its charge for a fair few minutes and, more importantly, is reassuringly bright. You even have a choice of brightness settings - using 2, 4 or 5 LEDs. The unit itself is roughly comparable in size to a pack of cards, although it is a little narrower and fatter. The outer edge feels slightly rubberised which helps you to maintain a grip while you wind.'

Millets Wind-Up Torch And Phone Charger

Millets-Wind-up-Torch.jpg

The cute-looking Millets Wind-up Torch and Phone Charger is a serious candidate for inclusion among those must-have gadgets in your hand-bag when on the road. Not only does the device provide LED lighting but more importantly, the charger would be a very useful feature for mobile phone users whose battery charges seem unable to hold-out to prolonged mobile usage. 'Simply wind the key and it generates its own electricity. The torch gives the option of two, four or five LEDs and the phone charger has adaptors for most Nokia, Motorola, Sony and Samsung handsets. It comes with a lanyard so you won’t lose it in the undergrowth.'

Dynamo Spotlight.jpg

There will always be a need for a light source around the home which would be much more powerful than your average flashlight or torch. Indeed, should your finances allow, you would be better served by a collection of flashlights each serving a particular purpose ranging from one for normal everyday use to those which assist with map reading , angling and stargazing. Of course a nice handheld Dynamo Spotlight would be useful as an emergency light but also as a portable light for the many instances when enhanced illumination would be needed in those areas around the home which for one reason or another may be un-lit.

Crank Dynamo Flashlight With AM / FM Radio And Mobile Charger

Crank Dynamo Flashlight with AM FM Radio and Mobile Charger.jpg

The Dynamo Flashlight is one combo with a difference incorporating as it does, a dynamo, flashlight, caution light, AM/FM radio and mobile phone charger. This gadget is yet another of those combination gizmos created to satisfy the need for light and communication in emergency situations. The flashlight is illuminated by one led bulb. While the radio is a essential item, the facility to recharge your cell phone battery is for me the major plus for this device, since cell phones have come to serve a vital role in emergencies such as hurricanes where the power lines may be down for an inordinate period of time.

Freeplay Sherpa Hand Crank Flashlight

Freeplay Sherpa Hand Crank Flashlight.jpg

The wind-up versions of gadgets may well come to rival the the battery and 'mains' powered rivals as folks become more aware of the increasing shortage of land fill space for garbage disposal. I was not initially won over to the to shake or hand cranked flashlight but the sexy design of the Freeplay Sherpa device really catches the attention. 'Designed to be a serious tool, the wind-up system offers maximum dependability for those times when you can't afford to be left in the dark by dead batteries. A quick wind (about 30 seconds) gives approximately 8 minutes of light on normal beam and you can rewind at any time for as much shine-time as you want. An LED charge level indicator tells you the optimal winding speed. The recharge system gives 30 minutes of ultra bright light, and 5 hours of regular light, using a high-efficiency, xenon-filled, dual-filament bulb. Internal mechanical components are specified to industrial standards for repeated use and long life.'

Gadgeteer Review: The RotoPower Products RotoGlo LED Flashlight

RotoPower.jpg

Are you a frequent user of Flashlights? If the answer is yes then you would be able to appreciate the push by some innovators to produce a product that operates without the need of a constant supply of battery power. Judie Hughes of the Gadgeteer reviews one such flashlight which should more than attract your attention. 'The RotoGlo flashlight measures 5.25" long x 2' wide x 1.75" thick. Its body is composed of matte silver plastic with black accents. The light's overall appearance appealing, and it is designed to comfortably fit in either the user's right or left hand. There are hard black rubbery scallops, for lack of a better description, on either side of the light which aid in keeping a secure grip.'
