The Solar AM/FM Radio/Led Torch does not require the use of physical energy [as do the hand cranked versions] to power up the device so I am sure this gadget would be very appealing to many persons other than myself. 'The rechargeable battery in the AM/FM radio is charged by exposing the unit to sunlight. Once charging is complete, the user gets a surprisingly generous 4-5 hours of use!' Since the device can also use AAA batteries it would be useful to keep a couple packs handy. Clearly, the Solar AM/FM Radio/Led Torch would be extremely useful as an emergency item especially as the hurricane season draws closer.

With only two weeks to go before the official start of the 2006 hurricane season, Flashtorch.com will be providing hurricane preparedness tips and general information for readers. Here is a brief description of the various weather systems which "develop over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico". 'The ingredients for a hurricane include a pre-existing weather disturbance, warm tropical oceans, moisture, and relatively light winds aloft. If the right conditions persist long enough, they can combine to produce the violent winds, incredible waves, torrential rains, and floods we associate with this phenomenon. In an average 3-year period, roughly five hurricanes strike the US coastline, killing approximately 50 to 100 people anywhere from Texas to Maine. Of these, two are typically "major" or "intense" hurricanes (a category 3 or higher storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale).'
