MonkeyLectric LED Light System Review - Boing Boing

MonkeyLectric-LED-Light-System.jpg

A review of the MonkeyLectric LED Light System for bikes has been posted over at Boing Boing. 'The MonkeyLectric is made and sold by known home-brew joygiver Dan Goldwater, the founder of Instructables. The website describes the device drily: "The MonkeyLectric m132s is a revolutionary bike light that keeps you visible - and in style. Its ruggedized design is perfect for daily commuters, urban cyclists, casual evening riders, BMX, festivals - anyone that wants to be visible after dark and not feel like a second class citizen." But the pictures and movies are what do the selling: bicycles with wheels like hallucinatory, out-of-control Ferris Wheels. An electric kool aid acid test contained within your bike's spokes.'

As the industry leader in high-performance bicycle lighting systems NiteRider continues to push development to higher levels with the announcement of the new MiNewt Mini-USB

Monkeylectric m132s LED Bike Wheel Light Review - Bits and Bikes

Monkeylectric-m132s-LED-Bike-Wheel-Light.jpg

A review of the Monkeylectric m132s LED Bike Light has been posted over at Bits and Bikes. 'I first heard of Monkeylectric last summer, when I met Dan Goldwater in Cambridge to see his then-current prototype. Dan, the force behind it, is a bona fide Maker. Prior to Monkeylectric, he was a co-founder of Instructables, a community site for how-to’s and DIY projects. He has contributed a large number of projects there, both LED-themed and bicycle-themed, and the m132s clearly draws on this body of work. Where the m132s differs, however, is in accessibility: It is for sale, already assembled and ready to use.'

Hope Vision 4 LED Bike Light Review - BikeRadar.com

Hope-Vision-4-LED.jpg

BikeRadar.com have published a review of the Hope Vision 4 LED off road night riding light. 'Like most Hope gear, it’s the practical elements of the new four-eyed LED that make it stand out. For a start, Hope has deliberately used LEDs with a 'warmer' colour than usual. That means you don’t get the initial shockingly bright ‘feck me someone’s driving a BMW down my singletrack’ effect of normal LEDs and HIDs. Instead, it’s a much more natural halogen-style illumination. This means even when you’re running the light in the higher power settings on damp woodsy singletrack, there’s much less glisten to dazzle you. The softer contrast from the warmer colours also makes it easier to perceive depth and judge the surface than the sometimes stark clarity of whiter lights.

Review: Mars 3.0 Bicycle Tail Light by Blackburn - About.com

Mars-3-0-Bicycle-Tail-Light-Blackburn.jpg

A review of the Mars 3.0 Bicycle Tail LED Light has been posted over at About.com. 'The Mars 3.0 tail light by Blackburn is a reasonably priced light, delivering good performance at a good value. It looks sharp, is sleek and aerodynamic, and most importantly, its seven LED's deliver bright blinking red light to highlight your presence. The long battery run time (50 to 150+ hours) means that you'll probably be replacing your bike before you replace the battery on the light.'

Pedalite Pedals Review - CommuteByBike

Pedalites.jpg

CommuteByBike have published a review of the Pedal-Powered Battery Free Pedal Lights from Pedalite North America. 'Installation of the pedals was a snap as they go on and off like any other pedals. Since the generator is completely contained within the pedal, the installation involves a standard pedal wrench. The first thing I noticed was the size of the pedals. They feel more like a freeride pedal than a road or commuter. And while it doesn’t effect my comfort or pedaling in any way, it doesn’t do much in terms of looks for the bike. I’m riding this simple, streamlined, 1-gear SE Lager and now have these big, bulky pedals attached to it.'

2008 Ay Up LED Bike Lights Review - Bikefix

Ay-Up-Lights.jpg

Bikefix have published a review of the Australian manufactured Ay Up LED bike lights. 'The first thing that one notices is that these are some tiny little lights. Check out the pictures (right). Each lamp contains one LED in an anodized aluminum enclosure about the length of an egg, but skinnier. They're about the same volume as my wireless Cateye computer (see picture) and are paired in lightsets which weigh at an amazing 58g. Throw in a minimalist helmet or handlebar mount and 3 hour battery (enough for two 16 mile laps) and you're up to 150g- probably no more than your stem. As an industrial designer, I was impressed by the functionality of all of the components. Calling them minimalist would be misleading, as nothing seemed to be missing or compromised.'

Bike Lights Reviewed - Kent's Bike Blog

Planet-Bike-Blaze-Headlight.jpg

Kent's Bike Blog have published a review of a few bike lights from Planet Bike. 'The Blaze One-Watt is bright. Low beam is brighter than what is put out by its half-watt sibling. I've been happily commuting with two of the half-watt lights this winter. At 6:00 PM, I set off for my 18 mile commute home in the 48 degree rain. The new light uses the same mounting bracket as both the Beamer and the half-watt Blaze but the light itself is about a centimeter longer.

Review: Bike lighting - An informal perspective - PT's Outing

DiNotte-Ultra-5.jpg

PT's Outing have published an easy to read but informative review of several bike lights. 'Anyway, here's a kind of rambling story about bicycle lighting spanning from the extreme budget low end to the high end. Actually, $200 is not really high-end, particularly for the off-road crowd. This is not one of your useful reviews because I'm comparing cheap and improvised lighting with something really expensive. Back in the day I used to use my Petzl Zoom head-torch as a headlight, wrapping the strap around the handlebars. I've still got that light, but in the era of LED lights I don't bother with it any more and I couldn't find it for this essay.'

Review: Fox Fury Performance Bike System - MtnBikeRiders.com

Fox-Fury-Performance-Bike-System.jpg

MtnBikeRiders.com have published their review of the Fox Fury Performance Bike System which is a bike headlamp which can be used as a headlamp or bike handlebar light. 'Wow this light is bright! With 24 leds it better be, right! The LED portion of the lights isn’t heavy at all. Fox Fury gives you two options to mount this light. Either on your head or on the handle bar. Most of the times I rode with it I wore it on my helmet or on my forehead. Only bad part about wearing it on my forehead is when I started getting sweaty. The foam padding, though comfortable before the ride, started to get itchy. If you are to wear the light on your helmet, I’d advice using a skater helmet. The light straps on to your lid much like a pair of goggles and the round shape of the skater helmet is ideal for mounting the unit.'

The "Instructable" outlining the construction of a do-it-yourself LED Bike Light System may seem a little more complex than the other "homemade" flashlights or lamps featured before but if you feel up to the challenge you can try your hand at the headlight or both the headlight/taillight bike light system.

Review: FoxFury Pro Luxeon Bike Light - Bicycling.com

FoxFury-Pro-Bike-Light.jpg

Christine Bucher writing over at Bicycling.com has posted a review of the FoxFury Pro Bike Light. 'Unlike many bar-mounted lights, which can be slid onto a mount, then slid off again easily, the FoxFury is a slightly more permanent fixture. The light screws onto the mounting system, so removal requires a few minutes, not seconds—but if you're a dedicated night rider or commuter, the brightness of this light will be well worth it. I also had some difficulty deciding how to carry the battery pack; it's not heavy, but the rectangular shape precludes carrying it in a bottle cage, and because I was on and off the bike, I didn't want to put it on my person. (I finally duct-taped it to my top tube).'

Dinotte Ultra 5 Headlight Review

Dinotte%20Ultra%205.jpg

Steve Beletich has reviewed the impressive Dinotte Ultra 5 road headlight over at Cycling News. 'Dinotte's aim with this compact, high-power LED light was to make a class-leading headlight for road bike use. While mountain bikers require large amounts of illumination that still seem to be best provided by HID and halogen systems, your typical road rider is more concerned about being highly visible to oncoming motorists, while having a moderate amount of illumination to show up potholes and other imperfections in the road. Oh, and compact dimensions and light weight also rate a mention for the style gurus and weight weenies among us.'
